P2P learning, how does it work?

You Can't Miss Out on this if you are in HR or L&D department.

If you are in the job market, either as a job seeker or as a job provider you know how important people's management and employee development is in current times.

And do you know which company understands it the best? 🧐

Google.

Google is the 1st choice of many job seekers for the longest period of time. Google has been ranked as one of the best places to work for the last six years straight. 😮

Today I will tell you about some of the successful L & D Strategies adopted by Google and how you can also take advantage of them.

The human resource department acts as the backbone of a successful organization. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of you. And taking care of employees means providing them growth opportunities which does not only mean formal training sessions, it can be informal learning sessions like P2P Learning or Peer-to-Peer Learning within the organization. 🤗

Google provides an innovative product, so it's easy to take its success for granted. But you must have heard of their unique office culture 🙅. It's not just their office design that stands out, they have a great learning culture as well which is focused on Employee-To-Employee Interaction.

Google has the most progressive human resource management system.

Though they only hire the top 1% of talent, Google doesn't believe in laying off their bottom-performing employees. ✔️

In a recent Harvard Business Review, Google SVP Laszlo Bock said that the worst-performing employees weren't bad at their jobs; rather they were in the wrong positions or were poorly managed.

As an HR professional or L & D manager, what do you learn from Google? 🤔

That you need to pay attention to what your employees are good at, and how you can leverage those skills which will benefit both the employee and the organization. This can be done by conducting Learning Needs Analysis. It will help you retain top talent and engage them in the right place. 👍

With that Google has also set up its own internal network called Googler to Googler. It is a program where employees train and teach their fellow employees. At Google, almost 80% of learnings are through employee-to-employee networks. ✔️

Googlers, themselves have confirmed that they ask each other whenever they need to figure out something rather than some 3rd party. They turn to their colleagues for information, advice, and support.

This shows the P2P or social learning culture at Google. Google encourages their employees (handpicked top talent) to volunteer and share their knowledge.

And why would they agree to the extra workload? 🤔

Because: 💡

  • The volunteers get a company-wide recognition

  • They get recognition from their managers

  • They get a certificate or a physical award

  • Milestones are celebrated e.g. 5th session or 10th session or 100% satisfaction score

Google has maintained a learning culture by adopting Micro-Learning. Trust me, Micro Learning is one of the best strategies Google is using. With attention span being reduced day by day, providing learning contents in small chunks is the way to retain knowledge. ✔️

I myself, as an L&D Strategiest and an instructional designer, divide the content into small digestible chunks in my projects which makes content easier to consume in one go as well as easier to go through whenever required.

Peer-To-Peer Learning is probably the most effective way to create a learning organization, but it requires diligence and other skills to do it. You need marketing skills to participate in peer-to-peer learning and program management skills to successfully work with multiple stakeholders who have joined the network. 😓

But once you get it right, there are huge benefits for both employees and employers. So, if you want a learning culture like Google, encourage P2P culture in your organization 😃.
