Wake Up Call: Don’t get caught up in daily operations

Empower your employees

Tired of Micromanaging employees?

I was. But I found out how to make my team independent.

Continue reading not to end up micromanaging employees who need help making every little decision, unable to think for themselves.

Even if you don’t have a team, you may have someone who needs help to make every decision in their life. Maybe friends, parents, spouse or children.

The solution I will tell you today will work in any situation, with any person you are having an issue with.

First let’s understand why certain people are rely upon others to make decisions for themselves.

There might be a couple of reasons:
  1. They might have had parents or elder siblings constantly telling them what to do, not to do since their childhood due to which they became indecisive even after growing up.

  2. The person is afraid of making wrong decisions & maybe redoing the whole work again.

  3. The person might not be confident. Lack of confidence is the major cause of indecisiveness in people causing people to doubt their own capabilities.

Why indecisive employees require more attention?

Having an indecisive person in the team is not a curse if it is due to good reasons like they deep dive into the matter & take time analyzing the situation before giving their final verdict.

However, problems such as low motivation and reliance on others can slow down the team as a whole and place an unnecessary burden on the team.

That particular person's co-workers end up doing extra work, delaying the project and costing the firm a lot of money because the decisions weren't made in time. So, is the solution firing people?

No, we don’t need to go to that extreme level without trying something far simpler.

  • Prevent decision fatigue. Allow your employees who tend towards indecision to focus on the most important choices for their role only.

  • Offer guidance that will help employees make decisions efficiently. For example, do they know who to go to with questions about certain subject areas? Do they know which issues require outside help, and when they’re expected to make executive decisions?

  • Give them credit for their efforts or achievements & grow their self esteem. Try coaching them on presenting their ideas confidently, especially outside the team. Don’t be afraid to give this feedback in your one-on-one sessions.

  • Conduct brainstorming sessions. Keep it casual but focus on a topic or problem like a structured group conversation so that everyone participates & provides their input without self-judgement.

One of the best solutions to help employees who are indecisive is to conduct training sessions or boot camps that boosts their critical thinking ability. 🧠

These kinds of training focuses on challenging the pre-conceived notion that the participants have, help them to analyze the situation through different perspectives & come up with innovative solutions.

Though our goal here is not dissecting a problem & finding a creative solution. The whole process will boost the confidence of employees & go through the whole decision making process that they need to make day-to-day decisions in their work.

Certainly, every individual is different in their own way. Not everyone has a great decision making skills by birth, but with simple activities & proper guidance you, as a leader can empower your employees to grow as a person and in their career which like free you up for matters more important in the company.

As a added benefit, if you empower your employees, they are here to stay. LinkedIn Learning’s 2021 Workplace Learning Report confirms that this, whereby Gen Z employees in particular place a high value on learning in the workplace.

Many companies have large numbers of Gen Z employees, so if you're having trouble managing this particular audience, try this blog ‘How to prepare for Gen Z in the workplace? 5 proven strategies’ to get more insights on Generation Z.

Replace Micromanagement with OKRs

Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) is a management technique used to set challenging and ambitious goals with measurable results.

Sometimes, employees are not the problem, managers are. Managers have a micromanaging problem.

According to a Slingshot survey, 79% of respondents have experienced micromanaging, and 69% say they are considering a career change because of micromanaging.

By setting objectives, managers and their team members will have insight into the entire work process, connecting daily tasks to the project's most important goals allowing managers to spend less time managing and more time coaching.
