Wake Up Call: The hidden costs of Employee Burnout

What you need to know...

You must have heard the term ”burnout" thrown around in the workplace, but have you ever stopped to consider its true costs

Trust me, Burnout is more than just a buzzword. 🙅‍♀️

It's a very real threat to your company's bottom line. WHO even identified burnout as an occupational phenomenon. ☠️

Though at first, the signs of employee burnout may seem insignificant like decreased productivity, absenteeism, and low morale. But the long-term effects can be debilitating to your company's success you have not imagined.

Today we have brought you a list of hidden costs of employee burnout and what you can do to prevent it.

Being in the professional space for more than 8 years, I have seen employers wrongly judging and equating burnout with Laziness, the Need for reskilling, and stuff. But it is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with to have a productive and healthy workforce.

These are the most common but threatening effects of employee burnout I have seen working with different companies.😨

  1. Increased Turnover Rates: Burnout is a leading cause of employee turnover. When your employees feel overworked and underappreciated, they're much more likely to search for opportunities elsewhere. And if you have been a part of the HR department, you know how costly and time consuming it can get to find the right fit for the job, including recruiting and training expenses.

46% of HR professionals say burnout makes up almost half of their annual turnover.

  1. Decreased Quality of Work: When people are overworked and exhausted, they don’t want to be wherever they are, they work as if they are on a notice period and don’t put their best work forward. When employees are burned out, the quality of their work can suffer, there will be errors leaving you with a work that doesn't meet expectations which means you can not trust them with the work so you need to redo the work.

  1. Higher Healthcare Costs: Burnout can lead to physical and mental health issues for your employees. These health issues can lead to higher healthcare costs for your company, including insurance premiums and paid time off.

Research has shown that Burnout Syndrome accounts for 8% of all occupational illness cases.

But the good news is that preventing Employee Burnout is entirely possible. 😃

How, let’s see:

  1. Prioritize mental health: Employers should provide resources and support for employees to manage stress and mental health, such as access to counseling or therapy as prioritizing employees’ mental health is as important as organizing physical fitness programs. Employers can also offer workshops or training sessions to help employees manage stress and build resilience.

Or if you have remote working policies, encourage them to work from home once in a while without affecting the quality of work. Change of surrounding, flexibility, and freedom over own time really helps boost the sense of satisfaction.

  1. Offer professional development opportunities: Employers can encourage employees to learn new skills and take on new challenges to maintain motivation and prevent boredom. This can include offering training programs, mentorship opportunities, or career development plans.

And, if you are looking for something valuable to help your employees grow as a person and in their professional life, we offer consulting services. You can contact our global L&D consulting to identify what your employees and company can benefit from.

  1. Allow for breaks and downtime: Employers can encourage employees to take regular breaks and time off to recharge and avoid burnout. This can include offering flexible work arrangements, such as job rotation or job sharing, and encouraging employees to take advantage of vacation time and sick leave.

But the important thing is to understand your employees and offer employees what they value most they will help them not feel burdened working their hearts out for your firm. 👍

So, take Employee Burnout seriously. By acknowledging the real costs and taking steps to prevent it, you'll be protecting both your employees and your company's bottom line. ✅
